With the dawn of a new year comes a whole slew of new makeup collections from many brands. Last year saw the rise of reddish eye makeup and blueish-pink lips. In term of texture, glossy eye makeup was popular with, in particular, THREE’s Whisper Gloss for Eye launching the trend. Now what’s new for 2017 in Japanese makeup?
Checking the best-selling beauty products 2016, it’s interesting how we can see the tendencies of the Japanese people’s lifestyle and economic conditions. The cosmetics matching these new needs are expected to grow in 2017.

Reddish eyebrow makeup in trend Japanese makeup techniques have been very innovative recently. After the “hangover makeup” or “ophero makeup”, consisting in placing the blush right under the eyes to create a tipsy face, the trend was then to underline eyes with pink/red liners and powders.. Now the trend is to have slightly reddish eyebrows.

Looking back in Japanese makeup history, it is amazing how much Japan has evolved in its use and its application of cosmetics. Over the years there were many Asian and Western influences that largely played a part in how makeup was applied. From the traditional Japanese makeup, geisha look, to Western looks, in the 90’s, the ganguro, and in the more recent years the “haafu kao make”, this just goes to show how versatile makeup can be and how trends really can influence one’s outer appearance.
